LA

LA-1

1. Gather materials- two cups, water, vinegar, baking soda, dry dirt

2. Fill two cups, each 1/4 full of dry dirt

3. Pour enough water in each cup to create "mud"

4. Pour vinegar in one cup, if it fizzes then soil is alkaline

5. Sprinkle baking soda in other cup, if it bubbles soil is acidic

Note: Organic matter plays a buffering role, protecting soil from becoming overly acidic or alkaline.   Organic matter usually moves the pH of both acidic and alkaline soils toward the neutral range.  Finished compost usually has a near neutral pH.
