Our Office of Educational Technology has been made aware of a hazardous trend circulating on social media platforms, particularly TikTok. Students are being encouraged to insert conductive materials—such as pencils, aluminum foil, or paper clips—into USB and other ports on school-issued Chromebooks. The intent is to create sparks and smoke, often leading to fires. This behavior poses significant health and safety risks. Tampering with electronic devices can cause short circuits, potentially igniting fires. Such actions can render Chromebooks inoperable. We urge all parents and guardians to have immediate conversations with their children about the dangers of participating in this or any similar challenges.

State Testing starts tomorrow for our 8th graders! Make sure they get 8-10 hours of sleep and eat a good breakfast. State Testing Spirit Week starts tomorrow as well.

Over the past two weeks, our students have had the incredible opportunity to learn straight from the pros!! We were honored to welcome professionals from Taylorsville Lake State Park and the Spencer County Fire Department into our school. From protecting our natural spaces to saving lives in emergencies, these community heroes shared real-world experiences that brought the career exploration lab to life. Because let’s be honest—who better to learn from than the people who live it every day? We’re so grateful to these professionals for pouring into our students and helping them explore future careers and the importance of service, safety, and conservation.

Interested current 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students can now apply for the 25-26 5th Period Academy Class at SCMS. This accelerated class provides an extra opportunity for students to study the subject(s) they are most interested in. Students study and prepare for academic competitions like KAAC Academic Team, Future Problem Solving, and MATHCOUNTS, while also working on projects and practicing study skills. Our students recently launched into one of their favorite STEM challenges—building and testing their very own rockets! From designing to countdown, their teamwork and problem-solving skills were truly out of this world.

The Grizzly Leadership Team and GT Program teamed up for a trip to the Asbury University Challenge Course, where students participated in exercises in team-building, problem solving, and strengthening communication skills. Students worked together to succeed and represented SCMS extremely well!

SCMS GT students recently visited Bernheim Forest & Arboretum to explore the connections between art and science in nature. Students had a fun trip with hands-on activities, outdoor learning, and creative exploration!

We are SO proud of our STLP students! A HUGE shoutout to Valeria, who placed second in the entire state with her stunning photography project titled “Duo.” Her creativity and talent wowed the judges and truly set her apart—what an incredible achievement! And the celebration doesn’t stop there… eight other projects from our team placed Top 6 in the state! These students represented Spencer County with excellence, creativity, and pride all day long. One of the STLP workers even stopped one of our students to say that Spencer County is a perfect example of what STLP is all about. That’s a moment we’ll never forget! We’re also incredibly proud of SCES and TES for the amazing projects they entered—it was so inspiring to see the creativity and talent shining in our younger students. The future of STLP in Spencer County is definitely bright! We are so proud of all their hard work and can’t wait to see how we level up next year!

Each 8th-grade student will showcase his/her learning in areas that make up our Profile of a Spencer County Learner. Defenses will happen on May 15th and 16th. SCMS 6th -8th Grade GT and Academy Class students visited the Louisville Waterfront Botanical Gardens on a field trip. Students learned about plant cells and toured the gardens right in time to see spring flowers blooming.

200 Grizzlies attended the silent disco as a MAP celebration for high growth and achievement! They had a blast! The DJ mentioned how great our students are! Thank you to Sara Rome and Sound of Silence for the great music and headphones!! The kids loved the music!!
